I love the new Girl of the Year (GOTY) doll from American Girl. Grace Thomas has some awesome accessories and inspiring stories that address themes like being flexible and trying new things, learning from mistakes, working together, following your dreams, and helping others. But as much as I love her collection, I can't stop thinking about what I could buy with that money instead. Her bakery cart is $150 dollars, which could buy some cooking classes or supplies to start your own bake stand. At $500 (the cost of her French bakery) you could buy four historical AG dolls or a real French bulldog like Grace's. So I will be doing a series of money saving play ideas focusing on the new GOTY and her stories. The first project I tackled was the pastry cart. Grace's cart is quite fancy with multiple layers and metal accents. I went for a simpler look with just one surface, which I embellished with floral contact paper. I made the handles from serious of aluminum foil. I used a mini cup with a strip of the same paper for the cake stand. I found these cute black shapes in my craft supplies to make mini chalk boards. I actually used oil pastels instead of chalk so the writing wouldn't smear as much. I used Belle's picnic background from the Princess and Me doll box. I found the Petite Patisserie and Eiffel Tower graphics online. The black tray is from an old jewelry box, and I used a little photo easel for the menu sign. The baguette is also from Belle's picnic set, and the other pastries are made from a toy called Whipple, which is available from Amazon. (There is even a macaron set!) Looks like it's a hit with my little critic. Stay tuned for more GOTY fun on a dime.
