This morning I found a toy picnic basket that was starting to fall apart, so I removed the inner lining, the handles, and the latch to use for something else. This gave me two circles of red checked gingham that looked perfect for a baking set. Here are the pieces of the disassembled basket. I hope to use some of the other pieces in future projects. I used this tutorial to make the chef's hat, only I used masking tape instead of ribbon and a stapler. Then I added a strip of decorative heart tape on top of the rim. I think it looks very appropriate for American Girl's Grace Thomas character, as she has lots of hearts in her collection. For the apron I just folded the fabric circle in half to make a semi-circle shape. Then I sandwiched flat edge between two pieces of masking tape for the sash and taped it together in the back. My circle already had a hem sewn around the edge so I left it like that, but you could easily as lace or ribbon trim. I added the decorative tape to the apron to match the hat. Easy peasy!
