One of my favorite exhibits at our local children's museum is the One World Village, which represents dwellings, food, clothing, and activities from various counties and cultures. On my latest visit, I was excited to see this new Japanese house structure. It has a special dining area with a traditional style mat and pillows, a low table, and pretend sushi and other food. I also love the doll displays in this area, which feature intricate, tiny dioramas. I've always wanted to visit Japan ever since I became good friends with a Japanese exchange student in high school. My brother-in-law lived in Japan for several years, and his wife is Japanese, so I'm glad to be able to share some of their culture with my children. Though I've never be to Japan, I have collected several Japanese artifacts given to me over the years by friends and family. Here is my own collection of Japanese dolls. The paper screen is actually from one of the American Girl paper doll sets. Everything else was purchased in Japan.
